Sonnet: Our Dream

My English teacher made everyone write a sonnet (Shakespearean sonnet). If you don’t know, a sonnet is a form of poetry with rhyming scheme

a-b-a-b–c-d-c-d–e-f-e-f–g-g

and there are three quatrains and one couplet at the end. The lines are in iambic pentameter. The sonnet usually presents some problem in the first two quatrains, deals with it in the third, and concludes with the couplet. Here’s mine.

Our Dream

by Joshua Wu

You might remember still that fateful day,

When married ‘midst of vibrant autumn leaves,

The future shining bright with hopeful days,

You wished a dream upon a crimson leaf.

And now your tragic grave stands bleak and gray,

For ne’er for her this wondrous world was meant.

And frosty death does chill the soul away

And shatter minds in desolate lament.

But now the light that brightens up the heart,

The dream who radiates her mother’s gleam,

Who taught the father bliss and grief apart,

Our daughter means forever more to me;

Though she had taken ‘way my cherished wife,

Our dream was she, my gentle fire of life.

Anyway, since this is my first time writing a poem, I figured I should post it here on my blog.

I really need an A in English ><

Download: Trinomial Factorization Utility

When I was in eighth grade, our Algebra I teacher made us factor trinomials all the time. I was so annoyed at doing this, especially for trinomials with larger numbers that I decided to write a program for it:

After being satisfied with this utility, I printed out the source code and showed it to my teacher, who prompted exclaimed “Very nice!” to my surprise. I expected a “Wow, Joshua, now you don’t have to think” response XD

Here’s what the source code looks like (bugs since then have been fixed):

AP Chinese Project 30-Second Video

Haha…the best thirty seconds of Weiqi (Go) ever…

Link (new window/tab): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VvHDoe3M_g

It took me about an hour to make this. (Cuz that was my first time with the video editing software!)

Awesome. Guess which guy in the video is me (or if I I’m even one of them).

Clubs

When I went to sign up for clubs, I really had no idea of which one(s) I wanted to join. So the end result was that I joined lots of clubs. I’ll describe some of them.

Chinese Chess Club

Wait. There’s a Chinese chess? Of course there is. This (really) old game is basically similar to Western chess, with pieces moving and capturing like rooks and knights, with several exceptions; the king can’t move out of the 3×3 square, the cannon (yea, there’s a cannon) captures by jumping over one piece, the horse (knight) can’t move if it’s blocked in front, blah blah blah. Not that I’ve never played Chinese chess before, but I think I’m sort of bad at it. xD

Go Club

Oh mannn, another strategy board game; I don’t feel like writing about go, so why don’t you just head over to Wikipedia? Oh, and I’m pretty good at this game. :P

Impromptu

This club is basically a music club that plays at all sorts of places (to raise money, I guess). Maybe this will be fun.

Mrs. Waller’s Writing Assignment for the First Day of School

Probably More Than You Want to Know About Your Greatest Student

One of the most important reasons for living here in America is, indubitably, to be educated in the English language. (Back in Taiwan, the English classes do teach basic English grammar, but they seriously lack opportunities for the writing and speaking aspects of the language.) The easiest and most effective way to fulfill this wish is without doubt to be presented with an English environment with a professional English teacher where English is the primary language. The problem, then, was choosing whether to take Honors English classes or normal classes. My father obviously wanted me to enroll in the Honors level, and I also believe that this is best. For me, learning something on an advanced level is much better than a lower level because I am able to digest information rapidly so that harder work will not be a problem. I hope that I will benefit greatly from this class this school year!

Well, aren’t you amazed at how incredible I am? Of course you are. (Are you one of those English instructors who despise the word “you” and its related kin? I’m using it because you are my audience, so this is correct, I’m sure?) Anyways, I have read that you would like to be informed of any concerns, “in general, for Freshmen year.” I am worried about finding my way around this high school, although it is a relatively small school. Just today, I had trouble finding the

Enter High School

OK, so now it’s time to reveal some info about myself. High school starts tomorrow, and when I mean that, it means that I’m going to be a freshman. Great. Many people say that high school is supposedly fun.

Except for one thing. My school is really nerdy and overwhelmingly Asian. White people (not being racist) are a very small minority. I don’t really know the exact numbers, but it’s like this:

Caucasian: 3%

African-American: 3%

Mexican: 3%

Half-Asian: 11%

Asian: 80%

Yeah, its crazy. Also, the expectations of the school and, therefore, results are also incredibly high. Drop-out rate is really low, and almost everyone gets to college. So yeah.

Clubs seem to be a plus (as long as the presidents and people don’t be lazy -_-)

Do/Did you like high school?

u broke ur promise, joshua… (Chat-Speak as We Know It)

Quoting from post “Winter Break“, posted almost two months ago on 12/22/2007…

“…. Sigh…. My next blog would be Clannad 11 and Shana 11, if it’s not so outdated already. I’ll try to keep up with anime from now on…”

And did I even do any Clannad or Shana posts? No. I didn’t procrastinate. I really didn’t. I didn’t…. Fine, I did. xP

Well, I guess I’ll blog more…

Winter Break

Ah yes; school’s over for this week. Mind you, they call it “winter break,” but it’s hardly a break if you consider all the *extra* homework they give you over vacation.

Example dialogue:

Professor Teacher: “This is your vacation homework.” *points to the board*

Student: “WHAT?! That’s too much work!”

Professor Teacher:  “You guys will have the whole week to do it. Therefore I’m giving you this much.”

Me: [whispering to Student] “This is ridiculous. Our teachers don’t understand the concept of a ‘break’ or ‘vacation.’”

Sigh…. My next blog would be Clannad 11 and Shana 11, if it’s not so outdated already. I’ll try to keep up with anime from now on–I guess, if I can manage with homework. Oh; speaking of homework, I would like to say that my English grammer is very good. Not that I’m bragging. Lols. Okay, maybe I am.
